Day One
On your arrival to Wellington, visit the Wellington Visitor Information Centre located in the beautiful, award winning Cameron Park which runs down one side of the main street of town. Have a chat to the staff who are well versed on the surrounds and will be able to give you info on all the hidden beauties of the area. Pick up a few brochures, purchase some souvenirs and grab an accommodation list which will tell you where all the caravan parks and camping grounds in the area are.
Take a drive down to the Duke of Wellington Bridge on the way to Montefiores on the northern side of town and have a picnic by the beautiful Macquarie River. Enjoy beautiful views of Mt Arthur and take a look at some of the historical sites, including the Lion of Waterloo.
Visit the Lion of Waterloo while you're in Montefiores and have a drink at one of the oldest pubs west of the Blue Mountains. The Lion of Waterloo is also the spot of the last recorded duel ever held in Australia. Read all about it at the plaque located in Teamsters Park opposite the Park.
Day Two
Take a drive out to Geurie and witness the hundreds of Cockatoos that camp there. Have a quick drink in the pub and explore the quirky cafe and shop before heading out to Bodangora. Visit the war memorial or call the Visitor's Centre to find out when the next Drag Races will be held at the Bodangora airstrip.
Head back into town and grab some lunch at one of the cafes and follow the historic walking tour around town. Wander through the undiscovered antique and second hand shops and then pop over to the Oxley Museum. Take a look at the magnificent collections they have on display and don't forget to wander through the Bark Hut and Old Schoolhouse. These amazing buildings were transported to the spot piece by piece from a nearby property and reconstructed just as they would have appeared 100 years ago. You will be able to experience who our grandparents lived and appreciate the hardships they endured.
Tonight, try your luck on the pokies at the club or one of the pubs and enjoy a delicious meal at one of the local restaurants. (The Visitors Centre has an Eating Out Guide that lists all the cafés, restaurants and takeaway shops in town) Enjoy live entertainment at the clubs and pubs and if you're lucky, you might be able to catch a performance at the Wellington Country Music Club Social Night, held once a month.
Day Three
Today?s the day to head out of town and take in the interesting villages of Mumbil and Stuart Town. Enjoy the scenic 20 minute drive to Lake Burrendong and stop in at the Burrendong Botanic Gardens and Arboretum to see rare flora and a plethora of Australian fauna grazing on and exploring the hills.
Take your boat out onto the lake or enjoy a lakeside BBQ. Try your luck at gold panning on the Stuart Town common and make sure you drop into the Stuart Town Rural Transaction Centre for all your visitor information, gifts and souvenirs.
Head back into town and drop into the world renowned Wellington Caves and Phosphate Mine. Take a tour of the caves with their massive stalagmites and wondrous formations. Listen to the stories of the guides as they take you deep beneath the earth and explain the wonders of the caves. Don't miss the Phosphate Mine which has been fully restored to bring the working mine back to life. The Phosphate Mine has no stairs and is wheelchair friendly.
Play a round of golf at the Wellington Golf Course, located right next to the Caves and wander through the nearby Japanese Gardens (free entry). Other attractions at the Caves are the Bottle House and the new Fossil Walk.
Day Four
Get back to nature and take a drive to the top of Mt Arthur for a beautiful view of the surrounding area. The lookout boasts one of the most spectacular views in the region. Discover some of the secrets of the valley today and vist Falls Road, a beautiful area where the river trips and falls over mini waterfalls and rocks. Enjoy Ponto Falls (a free camping spot) on the Dubbo side of Wellington and spend a peaceful day reading, catching up on your washing and watching the sun set over Mount Arthur.
Wellington is the perfect place to relax, explore and take time out on your trip. You will find you won't be able to resist spending extra days in Wellington as the quiet, serene atmosphere takes your cares away and reminds you why you went on the road in the first place!
