Water in Wellington
Wellington and Geurie residents are assured of a dependable water supply even in drought times. The water supplies for both Wellington and Geurie townships are drawn from the Macquarie River which is fed from Burrendong Dam. Burrendong Dam was constructed as an irrigation supply dam however the townships along the Macquarie river gain from the large storage capacity of the Dam. This means that Wellington and Geurie are amongst the most secure towns in Australia with regard to security of water supplies.
Burrendong Dam has on two occasions been as low as 1.5% capacity. While this has meant no water allocations for irrigators along the river the townships have still received their allocations and Wellington did not have to introduce water restrictions. In the event of a critical low situation, or if the State Government reduces allocations for the Macquarie river, Wellington Council has a Drought Management Plan which has levels of restrictions to ensure that Wellington or Geurie townships do not run out of water.
