Wellington was one of the first convict settlements west of Sydney. It is the oldest settlement west of Bathurst and is the original home of some of the first European families.

Wellington's first convict settlement housed professionals convicted of crimes such as doctors and solicitors. Many of these convicts moved back to the cities, but just as many remained in Wellington and the district to raise their families.

Wellington also has a strong indigenous history and many indigenous Australians can trace their fore fathers to local tribes or have connections with the local Nanima mission.

If you or your family are from the Wellington region, there are many resources available to you to find information.

Wellington Council holds a registry of cemetery records that public have restricted access to.

The Oxley Museum is another great resource and also hold cemetary records. The staff have a great deal of knowledge and can direct you to other helpful sources.
