The Oxley Museum was established to preserve and display a record of the development of the Wellington region. The building was built to design by architect J. F. Hilly in 1883 for the Bank of New South Wales. The Bank occupied the building until 1922, when it was sold to the Catholic Church. The Wellington Council purchased the building as a Museum & Cultural Centre. It was opened by Wellington Historical Society as Oxley Museum in 1967.
Two buildings have been re-erected in the grounds: Windora Bush School (complete with teacher, desks and school accessories) and the Stinson Cottage, (a slab dwelling originally built in 1851).
